Housed in a new state of the art facility within an historic Manhattan neighborhood, The City College of New York, Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture (SSA) is now seeking applicants for its pre-college and college level Architecture Summer Career Lab. Uniquely positioned as the only public school of architecture in New York City, the SSA Architecture Summer Career Lab exposes those considering a career in design to the theory and practice of architecture through lectures, workshops, office tours, and design studios taught by our award winning and internationally recognized faculty. Through an emphasis on hand craft and digital fabrication, interdisciplinary research, and ecologically and culturally sustainable practices, at the Architecture Summer Career Lab you will get to explore the many ways you can engage with the practice of architecture while learning about new theories, materials and technologies. The four week, SSA Architecture Summer Career Lab provides students with the practical experience required to make an informed and meaningful career choice.
Studio Culture and Facilities
Beginning with exploratory hand-sketches and advancing through measured, precise digital drawings and three-dimensional models, you will be taught how to take an architectural project through various stages of design and development. With your own dedicated work space in one of the light-filled Spitzer School studios, groups of between 12 and 15 students will receive individual attention from design instructors who provide continuous direction and encouragement on a daily basis. Instruction includes these personal, one-on-one meetings, small group discussions, and the chance to have your work reviewed by distinguished design professionals who offer constructive criticism and feedback. Drawing, model-making, software and portfolio workshops provide you with the many and necessary manual and digital skills to successfully develop and represent your evolving project. You will also learn by attending lectures by distinguished design professionals who are experts in the latest developments and trends in the profession. Students in the Summer Career Lab will utilize our library, digital design and fabrication labs, and model shop to develop projects, and our digital cameras and computer labs to document them for their portfolios. Throughout, students learn the skills required to succeed in a professional program in architecture and gain exposure to the many aspects of contemporary architectural practice.
The SSA Architecture Summer Career Lab will expose students to college level architectural study, providing an important advantage over those pursuing the major without this experience. Additionally, students will be able to develop an architectural portfolio, which will greatly help in preparing applications to both undergraduate and graduate level professional schools. If you are a high school junior or senior considering architecture as a major, a college level student considering a change in focus, or simply someone interested in pursuing a career in design, you are encouraged to apply. Join us to build your creative skills and develop a strong portfolio for college admission.
If, after successful completion of our pre-college or college/adult level courses, students go on to attend either the CCNY Bachelor of Architecture or Master of Architecture program, 3 college credits will be granted toward your education. For students who decide to attend institutions other than CCNY, credit acceptance or transfer will be at the discretion of the home registrar at those institutions.
